The Tyme of Your CPU Life

You’ve got your finger still on the steampunk world, that ever-so-pretty subculture embraced wholeheartedly by these friendly internets. YD’s posted their fair share of steampunk stuff, and that tradition of love for it continues right this very moment. The “Woodguy” contacted us and rung our ears off with his excellent new covers for iMacs. Covers? Why that’s madness, you say, only PC computers can have a new level of design on top, Apple computers are already perfect, aren’t they? No way, no way at all! What they need is more wood.

They need wood, I am telling you that right now. Woodguy’s designed a couple of slick covers for the monitor/computer in 1 iMac series made of a couple different breeds of wood.

There’s the Shaker Style or the Maplewood, both will get your eyeballs in a bind. The Shaker Style is cherry with square peg and crown trim – painted marble base unit and an optional solid cherry accent trim for your keyboard. The Maplewood on the other hand is figured maple with a maple base. Extra special. Extra elegant.

Great Balls of Water!

Plastic water bottles are sooo 2009. What’s now and wow in H2O delivery is the OVO by designer Manuel Desrochers. Inspired by the successful AQUAOVO, Manuel takes a more transparent approach to filtered water housing design. Water is already front and center in our daily lives, so why not make it front and center in our kitchens? Made of glass and environmentally friendly BPA-free recyclable resins, this water dispenser can also dispense more festive liquids for parties and social occasions. Counter or wall mountable, this design holds from 5-6 liters of liquid, comes in several colors and is targeting a $150 – $200 price range. Cheers to the death of the water bottles!

Pure Safe Water In The Tropics

AquaIris Portable Water Purifier is meant for folks in the tropical regions and is packaged as a really sexy looking bottle. The reusable removable filter is attached to a lanyard that sports all the usage instructions. You need to fill the water into the bottle and insert the filter into the special slot. The water travels under a layer of converter crystals where germicidal UVC rays directly hit every water molecule passing by, thus making it pure and safe to drink.

Dragspelhuset – the Accordion House by 24H Studio

This extention is to an original cabin from the 1800’s, located on the shore of the lake Ovre Gla in the nature reserve Glaskogen in Sweden. According to swedish building regulations it is not allowed to built along the lake shore unless it is an extention to an existing building. It also can not exceed a maximum floor area and the building must stay 4.5 meters clear of the site boundary.

Given by the building regulations Architect 24 made an extention to the cabin that can evolve, the building literally adjust itself to its environment depending on weather conditions, season or the number of occupants. The extention unfurls like a butterfly; during the winter it’s a cocoon, compact with a double skin against the cold. During the summer it unfold its wings for extra shelter during rainy days.

Swivel Socket by Cyber Demon

It’s a surge protector designed to remove the annoyances of a regular power strip. The sockets rotate 180 degrees so you can fit any combination of plugs, chargers, and adapters. The dials on the front allow you to select an icon to represent what you have plugged in, so you don’t need to jiggle and tug on the cables when you want to unplug a specific device.

Picking This Apart

One tooth pick is nothing but hundreds of thousands combined and it becomes a marvelous piece of art. That’s because of a special characteristic we instinctually see – patterns. Wisteria was used to make this massive wood sculpture called Lune Blanche which means white moon. All those toothpicks… my teeth and gums are actually scared right now.

I got NEWS For You
Motorized wheelchairs are a great invention, giving millions of disabled people mobility and independence but they’re still prohibitively expensive. Even with insurance, it can take families years to save up the cash to buy one. An alternative is the NEWS (New Electric Wheelchairs) by Ju Hyun Lee. The contraption attaches to any standard wheelchair giving you instant motorized power. Great for hospitals, nursing homes, physical therapy centers, and a future episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Growing pot

What a fool I was for not posting this yesterday! Now it’s 4/21 and I’m making a joke about marijuana. But in fact, it’s only a play on words. The project you’re about to take a peek at is called “Growing Up”, and in fact it is, truly, a growing pot. It is a pot that is adjustable for a growing plant, getting bigger as the plant it houses gets bigger, allowing for a longer stay for the plant, and less pots used.

It’s just a wrap! That’s pretty smart stuff. Such a simple design. Concerned with the amount of different pots used while growing plants that have a tendency to outgrow their shells, designer JunBum Park conceived of this growing pot. With a flexible sheet exterior that fits into the grooves of the pot bottom, you’ll always be big enough.

Make Cooking A Dining Experience

Why is it the kitchen and dining area are in two separate rooms? They function together in a symbiotic relationship more so than any other in a house. Space is a premium so designers are thinking modularity and this exercise in efficient cooking/dining is probably just one of many concept we’ll see . It’s a dining table with a work/cook top; or is it a work/cook top with a dining table? In one fell swoop, you get both with the added bonus of an office nook. The ceramic cook top is insulated with silicon to protect that beautiful wood beneath. I want this badly.

Designer: Jonas Buck

Oh Cup Noodle, you fed me all thru college when I was broker than a joke. You flavored my palette with harmonies of sweet and saltiness. How I enjoyed the gummy texture of your noodles and fondly remember burning my tongue several times because I couldn’t wait for you to cook and cool. Sadly Cup Noodle, your styrofoam packaging is a big no-no so I want to show you this one; collapsable, disposable, and much easier to ship.

I know that Molecular gastronomy is a scientific discipline involving the study of physical and chemical processes that occur in cooking, but this is the first time I’m coming across a device that actually allows you to do some Molecular Cooking! Consisting of a whip syphon, vaporizer and blow torch the “Moleculars” is something that would make an adventurous cook pretty happy in the kitchen. Experimentation would be the name of the game.

Designer: Sandro Frank

If you’re not up to the Blowtorch style, then maybe its safer that you stick to the un-conventional cooktops that we recently featured at YD. Random concepts that are evergreen!

UPS, Fold It, Tape It, Ship It

It seems a box is always too big or small so designer Patrick Sung came up with flat sheets of recyclable corrugated cardboard called the Universal Packaging System or UPS (unrelated tho the logo is eerily similar). The patterns make it easy to fold and conform to almost any shape while maintaining structural rigidity and protecting the contents. Love the idea of saving on packaging but will this actually work? I suspect each sheet would have to be sufficiently padded; not too thick, not too thin, but just right said Goldilocks.

Bottoms Up! It’s Tap Water

Many of us are finicky about the source of our drinking water; the privileged lot downs Kona Nigari or Evian while the rest of us are happy with any odd brand. Although countries like U.S. and U.K. assure safe water from the kitchen tap, not everyone consumes it. One of the reasons we should be looking at this source is, the amount of waste generated from the bottled water. Efforts have to be made to adopt concepts like the Aqua Mineralis, to sustain and protect our environment.

Crystallized icicles that are made from concentrated mineral water, is the healthy alternative being offered here. Picture yourself pouring purified tap water into the specialized decanter, with the mineral water crystal sitting atop the neck funnel. Trickle by trickle the two mix to tango at the bottom of the pitcher.

The end result: you consume one less plastic bottle and get high on H2O!
